New device used in monkeys sparks hope of paralysis cure

Geneva, Switzerland: A new device has allowed two monkeys to regain use of their paralyzed legs by transmitting brain signals wirelessly, bypassing their spinal cord lesions.

The implantable device, called a neuroprosthetic interface, was developed by an international team led by researchers at the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne (EPFL) and may soon be tested as a remedy for paralysis in humans.

For the first time, I can imagine a completely paralyzed patient able to move their legs through this brain-spine interface" Jocelyne Bloch, a neurosurgeon at the Lausanne University Hospital, said in a press release from EPFL.

The interface conceived at EPFL is a multi-component brain-spine connector, which decodes signals from the part of the motor cortex responsible for leg movements.It then relays those signals in real time to the lumbar region of the spinal cord that activates leg muscles to walk.In the two test cases, the monkeys' motor cortex and spinal lumbar regions were still functioning.

The interface was, therefore able to wirelessly relay the movement instructions while skipping the damaged area of the spine causing the paralysis, EPFL said.

The monkeys regained some use of their paralyzed leg within two weeks, walking on both a treadmill and on the ground, Nature said in a press release.

The journal noted that implantable technology that decodes brain signals has previously allowed a human patient to move a prosthetic or robotic hand.But using a neuroprosthetic interface to activate a complex leg muscle in a primate was a first, Nature added.

The lead scientist on the groundbreaking project, Gregoire Courtine of EPFL, warned "it may take several years before all the components of this intervention can be tested in people."

The concept of the interface was developed in Switzerland, key components came from Brown University in the US state of Rhode Island and the medical device company Medtronic, based in Dublin.

NASA develops "Electroactive Bandages" which heals the wound

The Nasa has developed an  electroactive bandage that uses electricity to significantly promote healing of injured wounds.

Electroactive material is so sensitive that a push or even blow on it can create an electric charge.

In conditions of non-Earth gravity, human blood displays quite different behavior from that on Earth.

"This technology is a device that uses electrical activity to facilitate the wound healing process while protecting the wound." NASA wrote on it's blog.

An electroactive device is applied to an external wound site. The wound will be healed easily.
NASA also said that it minimizes infections and complications such as illness or amputation.
It could be used by military personnel wounded in the field, patients in the hospital who have undergone surgery/who have suffered a serious wound and astronauts in space.

NASA and FEMA Teamed up for Global Impact

Apocalypse of the earth is the biggest threat for us. Since many times small threats have  arrived but we haven`t witnessed any big calamity from Space.

Recently NASA(National Aeronautical and Space Administration) has  a meeting with FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) for the probable threat of asteroid Collision with earth in 2020.Both agencies teamed up, to prepare for this threat by holding exercise for an emergency situation.In This Exercise they would work together to evaluate the threat , prevent panic and save as many people as they can from this collision.

NASA`s Science Mission Directorate`s Administrator gave a statement , "But unlike any other time in our history, we now have the ability to respond to an impact threat through continued observations, predictions, response planning and mitigation”. "It is critical to exercise these kinds of low-probability but high-consequence disaster scenarios," FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate said in the statement. "By working through our emergency response plans now, we will be better prepared if and when we need to respond to such an event."

This Asteroid is around  300 to 800 Feet – this is the latest  scenario they recorded. At first when they know about this asteroid their was only 2 percent probability of asteroid being a strike to earth in 2020.As the time goes , the trajectory of asteroid shifted and Probability of strike becomes 65% and then become 100% in May 2017. Location, where there are most chances of impact, is Southern California or nearby in the Pacific Ocean.
